In
the sleazy world of weapons trading problems are generally seen
as business opportunities.
Alex
Nicholl, the man behind the largest arms fairs in the world, DSEi
in London, must have pondered his future for all of 30 seconds
after his employers, Reed Publishing recently dumped his whole
division after the public outcry over their profiteering from
misery & destruction.
But
Alex is a man with a vision and he was quick to set up shop on
his own and set his sights on Australia. As Alex puts it in his

2.
Asia-Pacific and Australia – key facts about the growth
markets
•
1994 – 2006 only region with increase in defence expenditure
as percentage of GDP
• Forecast to overtake Europe and Middle East as the
largest defence market
• A$131 billion (US$104 billion) of defence projects
scheduled in the next decade
• Australia spending A$31 billion (US$25 billion)
over the next 10 years |
| In
salivating over the opportunity of making a few bucks over
the fact that our region will soon be squandering more money
than anywhere in the world on weapons, he was joined by the
Premier of South Australia, Mike
Rann, who has issued his own statement about APDSex: |
| |
"The
city of Adelaide – the dynamic and undisputed centre
of the booming Australian defence industry – will
be the place to be in November 2008....
I urge you to visit the Asia Pacific Defence and Security
Exhibition in 2008 – both to see the latest and best
from our Asia Pacific region, and to survey the terrific
business and investment opportunities now opening up in
South Australia" |
Alec
Gilbert, Executive Officer of the Adelaide Convention Centre
who according to Alex Nicholl put in a strong bid for APDSex,
added to the chorus of greetings: |
| |
"Now
this is the first time Asia Pacific Defence and Security
has held its international exhibition in Australia...It
is fitting it is being held in Australia's defence capital" |
But we shouldn't
forget, this exhibition is about selling weapons.
The people
exhibiting at this exhibition and those promoting it are
little more than sleazy gun runners, profiting from and
promoting the ravages of war.
The Exhibition
will be held, ironically enough, from 11 November 2008
at the Adelaide Exhibition Centre, between North Terrace
and the Torrens.
